Petrochemical Solenoid Valves

Solenoid valves for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries are generally used to control combustion systems, pilot / main line fuel processes and control line applications. Without them many if not all automated and semi-automated processes could not be controlled by modern day process control technologies. Without solenoid valve functionality the man power required to control these processes would also need to be increased, potentially making the process commercially none viable. It is not surprising that solenoid valves have evolved into their own technology with specifications targeted at the requirements of the many industry sectors they support. None more so than the petrochemical industry.

Petro-Chemical Solenoid Valves

The Petro chemical refineries require a range of 316 stainless steel solenoid valves with either flanged or threaded connections for pressures up to 200 bar for crude oil and the refined Petro-chemicals produced from these processes. Additional applications for 3/2 way brass and stainless steel valve actuators are used where a small 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" BSP/NPT 3/2 way universal 316 stainless steel solenoid valves with manual over ride or manual reset can be used as a pneumatic valve controllers for much larger high pressure petro-chemical specific process valves.

Catalytic cracking plants are one of the most significant and important processes that convert high temperature heavy hydrocarbons of petroleum crude oil down to gasoline, petrol and gases. Stainless steel solenoid valves are used on process lines for the control of this cracked liquid and gas media and in 3 port 2 position universal form used as external valve controllers for larger process catalytic cracking plant pneumatic valve control.

Gas and liquid plants or Gas to Liquid refinery processing plants that convert gaseous hydrocarbons into longer molecular hydrocarbon chains such as gasoline or diesel use a wide range of 2-way and 3-way Solenoid controlled valves. Typical applications for gas / liquid refineries are for the external pneumatic control of other larger process ball, gate and butterfly valves with high corrosion resistance and ATEX approvals.

On shore refinery industry have demands for quality reliable 2/2 and 3/2 way solenoid valves for low, medium and high pressure process applications with corrosion resistant 316 stainless steel construction and ATEX protection. Additional applications common to On Shore refinery and Oil and Gas Wellhead control applications are the pneumatic control of large bore refinery process pipe line valves for crude oil, high pressure gas, bitumen and diesel.

In all these environments Solenoid control valves are used in ATEX hazardous areas where there is or could be potentially explosive gases or dusts within the surroundings that could be ignited by any spark or exposed electrical failure. To this end a full range of ATEX encapsulated solenoid coils with thermal fuses to EEx m Group II temperature class T4, ATEX Explosion and flame proof metal encased coils to EEx d IIC temperature class T4 and T6 and ATEX Intrinsically Safe low power EEx ia IIC temperature class T4 and T6 coils are available.

Environmental Considerations

The gas and oil industries provide for some of the most extreme environmental conditions that a solenoid valve will be required to operate in. Temperature environments that have a range from sub zero in arctic regions to the temperatures found in some of the hottest places on earth. These extreme environments also encompass salt water and dry fine particle dust environments. To operate within such extremes solenoid valves have evolved a unique sub set of specifications to provide the essential functional properties of the solenoid valve to the gas and oil industries.

While many of the unique specification requirements of a solenoid valve to safely operate within the gas and oil industries were developed with the environments of the exploration sector in mind, many of these same specifications are still required for solenoid valve operation in the oil and gas industry's on-shore sector.

Specialised options have been designed to meet the needs of the chemical processing and oil industries which include junction boxes, pipe taps, visual position indication, proof of closure or open ATEX rated position feed back switches, ATEX solenoid explosion and flame proof protection, Total certified corrosion protection GS EP CAR 350, helium leak and pressure testing and a wide range of industry specific certifications with world leading agency approvals including ATEX EEx d II 2 G/D IP6x, UL/CSA, 3.1b material, PED pressure equipment directives 97/23/CE to name but a few.
